Highland Perthshire
Highland Perthshire
This beautiful area of Scotland, covering approximately 1,000 square miles, begins at Dunkeld & Birnam, just as you cross the Highland Fault Line. Majestic scenery, clad in a spectacular array of autumnal colours, stretches northwards to Blair Atholl, Pitlochry, Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch, and westwards towards Aberfeldy, Loch Tay and Kenmore. For more details about all the “must see” places to take in, please read on.
Dunkeld & Birnam
Charming shops, live music in the pubs, and delicious food, all in a perfect setting on the banks of the Tay, overlooking Thomas Telford’s famous bridge, and the ruins of Dunkeld Cathedral. You’ll find the Beatrix Potter Garden in Birnam, as well as the Birnam Arts & Conference Centre with its year-round programme of exhibitions, music and dance.
Pitlochry & Killiecrankie
The bustling Victorian town of Pitlochry has been a popular holiday destination since Queen Victoria’s reign! It’s only a short walk or drive to Faskally Wood, where you will find pretty lochs and abundant wildlife during the day, and The Enchanted Forest at night! Plenty of places in and around the town to stay, eat or enjoy a quiet drink. Visit the famous dam and fish ladder, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, have a round of golf or visit one of the local distilleries. And don’t miss out on a visit to the nearby Killiecrankie Visitor Centre and the Soldier’s Leap!
Blair Atholl
Blair Atholl is the gateway to the Cairngorms and, historically, all routes north passed through this pretty village. The landscape in this area is more rugged, and is perfect for any number of outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling, shooting, fishing and pony-trekking. Good hotels and camping/caravan/chalet accommodation are available. Blair Castle and its grounds are definitely worth a visit, as are the monument to the 51st Highland Division and the Museum of Highland Life. For retail
therapy, or a delicious bite to eat, there’s the House of Bruar.
Kinloch Rannoch
Why not include this beautiful area in your trip to Highland Perthshire, with the magnificent mountain of Schiehallion as its backdrop? There is plenty to do and see, and an abundance of cosy B&Bs, self-catering cottages and hotels. Stretch your legs and see some of Highland Perthshire’s celebrated wildlife, in its natural setting, on the hills, in the woods or by the lochs.
Aberfeldy & Kenmore
Situated on the banks of the famous River Tay, amidst beautiful scenery, with plenty of good shops, galleries and cafes, Aberfeldy is only a short hop from Kenmore and the panoramic views looking west down Loch Tay. Plenty of activities here to satisfy the most energetic, including golf, pony-trekking, wildlife safaris, sailing/water-sports, the Scottish Crannog Centre and, of course, excellent restaurants and places to stay.
